Monza – Ford letter
I have a letter dated 19th May, 1966 from Edgy Fabris, the manager of special affairs at Ford Motor Company.
It reads:
Dear Eric:
Just a note to express a personal ‘thank you’ for your tremendous stint at Monza, also for your support during the actual run which made life very much easier for Big Jim and myself and which contributed so much to our success, despite the few teething troubles.
The Directors are holding a small cocktail party to celebrate your record breaking success, here at Warley, on Tuesday May 24th. Time 5.30pm. I do hope you will join us on this occasion, particularly as it is intended to make a small presentation to each driver. You will also have an opportunity to see a small film clip of your activities at Monza.
Nice letter but it’s the next part I love so much. The letter continues:
I am sending you separately a cheque for £230 which is made up of £10 per day to cover your out of pocket expenses, plus £10 per record.
Looking forward to seeing you next Tuesday.
Yours sincerely,
Edgy
Of course, I know that £10 was a lot more in those days but to drive a car at speeds of over 100mph on a banked circuit, in fog, at night, should have been worth more than a tenner I think
