He has been writing his memoirs for the past four years.
The opening chapter of the book describes how he and Ken Chambers were in Ethiopia in 1963, after being attacked by bandits at the dead of night in deserted terrain. They had survived the bandit attack but bullets had pierced the fuel tank and the container of water. Miles from anywhere, with just a few drops of fuel in the car and nothing to drink but two cans of Coke, how are they going to survive?
It’s hardly a spoiler when I tell you that they did, but how?
As they drove through the night, Eric reflected on his life. What had brought him, the illegitimate son of a gypsy turned motor dealer, to this desolate place?
The story of his life began in 1924 when he was born in gypsy caravan in a Yorkshire field. The book takes us through his early days as he starts to use up his nine lives. As we go through the book, we travel with him to Africa for the first time, as a young soldier in World War ll. His next posting was to Germany. Knowing Eric as we do by this stage, it’s hardly a surprise to read about him helping a friend’s father escape from the Berlin’s Russian sector, right under the noses of Russian guards…
The Russian guards didn’t get him, but back in Barnsley after the war he was shot and seriously wounded but lived to grow his business and develop his new career in motorsport.
That’s when things really start to get exciting…
