Press quotes from Eric Jackson and Ken Chambers
I have a book of press-cuttings collected by Ford Motor Company during the race between the Ford Corsair and the Windsor Castle. This was sent to my dad by Walter Hayes – hand written in the front of the collection it says “Well done! The best publicity ever. Kind regards, Walter.”
Here are some of my favourite quotes from the cuttings:
“We got very fed up of people pointing guns at us” Ken Chambers
“For three days in the Congo, all we ate was a small tin of salmon each. We were too tired, tense and worried to be hungry.” Eric Jackson
“I’ve eaten gallons of rice pudding on the move.” Ken Chambers
“Well, not for a week or so.” Eric Jackson, when asked if he’d do the trip again.
“There must be a better way of spending eleven and a half days.” Ken Chambers, at the end of the race.
“The most valuable items on our trip? The tin opener and electric kettle.” Ken Chambers
“We get on well. We have a great time. He’ll probably put me through the windscreen this time just because I said that.” Eric Jackson before the start, pointing out his St Christopher medal and lucky horseshoe.
“If you clobber an elephant in the dark you’re in real trouble. You can’t rush an elephant; you just have to wait for him to move.” Eric Jackson
“Giraffes too are a menace. At night for all the world they look like low-flying aircraft’. Ken Chambers
